Keeping with the fact that most land gastropods (land snails and slugs) are hermaphrodites (have both male and female sex organs) and marine gastropods are dioecious in real life, only two characters in Snailiad are explicitly gendered: Moon Snail (referred to with "he"; real life moon snails have male and female sexes) and Isis (referred to with "she"). Auriplane has stated that she intended to keep the genders of other snails ambiguous.[1]

It is likely that Sun Snail is a species of land snail; before he became Moon Snail, his diet consisted of grass.
